My Dream House

A personal journal of my favourite architecture, predominantly clinker-style residential buildings around Melbourne.

More and more of my favourite houses around Melbourne are being renovation-rescued to within an inch of their lives or torn down so another McMansion can dwarf it’s neighbours. My favourite period is between the 30s and 50s. Many of these houses are passing to their 2nd or 3rd owners now, and losing their original stylings. I’m taking this opportunity to document these houses before this happens, as much for my own personal enjoyment as anything else.

I am not an expert in this area! I welcome any corrections to terms, periods etc!

My Original Dream House is located in a back street of Brighton. It is not a large, ostentatious 3 storey with tennis court complex. It is a simple, single-level residence that is very restrained in style. While I will document it, it is obviously in the care of a very loving owner and won’t be suffering from the addition of ultra modern lighting or other inappropriate design.

Since Original Dream House has come OTT Dream House (2 storey art-deco extravaganza in, Miami style), Not To Be Dream House (we nearly bought it, but it was a blessing in disguise that we didn’t - reno kings we aren’t), and Family Home Dream House (the house we did buy… history TBA!).

Wherever possible I will endeavour to ask permission before photographing these buildings, and will not publish or disclose the addresses unless permission has been granted. If you see your house on this website and would like it removed please just let me know.
