Kick off your shoes, and make yourself at home at possibly the world’s most niche blog. You can see that Family Dream House has come a long way since we bought her 3 years ago, in that panic-attack inducing, enormous photo on the cover of Live Wire today. As more and more houses in our street are torn down, and the personality of our suburb (and Melbourne) changes, stay tuned for more posts about my beloved Dream Houses (I promise, really).

Longford Dream House
September 14th, 2011 · No Comments
When I was 9 or 10, my parents designed and built a different kind of home - a bus, for the 5 of us to live in. Until this point I don’t have any recollection of ever being outside of Victoria. Even at this age, I remember being struck by the differences in residential architecture as we ventured outside our home state and into South Australia. Little twists on the theme - perhaps a slightly different style roof, or brickwork on a window surround - that made the old and new houses feel different to those at home.I still notice these small details as I travel now. In older houses in Tasmania, for example, I notice that inset double doors are very common, and the placement of windows right on both corners of the house is too. For all of the driving around I have done though, I have never seen anything like this house. I badly wanted to ask to see the inside, and still kick myself that I didn’t have the courage to ask.The roofline is very interesting, but it was the mosaic-tiled and curved entrance that really stood out to me.

Beachside Dream House

I don’t think there’s much danger of Beachside Dream House being knocked over any time soon, though it has been a long time since I’ve been past to check. It’s got a bit of a Miami art-deco feel to it, but I’m not sure what the columns are about?

Grand Dream House

I still shake my head that my gorgeous Grand Dream House was bulldozed. I would often drive far out of my way to pass it (and force my patient and understanding husband to do so, too), and daydream about what it looked like inside. It sat so proudly on a corner block, with a circular driveway and a beautiful brick fence that matched the facade - something I don’t see very often.
